The Husqvarna Isn't the Light One, Not Once You Add Fuel

Everyone picks the FE 501s over the WR450F for a supermoto build assuming it's the lighter, more exotic option. The spec sheets are lying to you in two different directions, and once you correct for it, the case for the Husqvarna gets a lot weaker.

Every “which base bike” thread for a supermoto build ends up in the same place: Husqvarna FE 501s if you’ve got the money, WR450F if you don’t, and the FE gets described as lighter and more sophisticated almost as a given. I believed that too until I actually lined up the current spec sheets instead of going off reputation, and the weight claim doesn’t hold up the way everyone assumes.

The spec sheets are measuring different things

Yamaha publishes wet weight for the 2024 WR450F: 258 lb, full of fuel, ready to ride. Husqvarna publishes the FE 501s at 117.4 kg — which is 258.8 lb, but that number is explicitly “weight without fuel.” Add the FE’s 8-liter tank back in, roughly 12–13 lb of fuel, and you’re at around 271 lb wet. The WR450F isn’t just competitive on weight, it’s the lighter bike once both numbers mean the same thing — by around 13 lb, in the direction opposite of what the FE’s reputation would have you believe.

This isn’t Husqvarna doing anything shady; dry-weight specs are common in the dirt bike world and everyone technically discloses their methodology. But nobody reads the fine print before they repeat “the Husky’s lighter” in a forum thread, and it changes the actual case for paying the premium.

The premium is real, and it buys something

Speaking of premium: 2024 MSRP is $10,299 for the WR450F and $13,049 for the FE 501s — a $2,750 gap. That’s not spent on nothing. The FE 501s runs a 6-speed transmission versus the WR’s 5-speed, a genuinely bigger engine (510.9cc against the WR’s 449cc, so some of what people attribute to “Husqvarna engine character” is partly just displacement), a factory quickshifter, traction control with multiple ride maps, WP XACT suspension, and Brembo-family brakes. On paper, machine for machine, the FE 501s is the more sophisticated motorcycle. If you were buying either one to ride stock, off-road, competitively, I’d tell you to stop reading this and buy the Husqvarna.

You’re not doing that. You’re building a supermoto.

Why the sophistication matters less than it sounds like

Traction control and multiple ride maps are features that earn their keep in variable off-road traction — loose dirt, mud, roots, the whole reason the FE 501s exists. On a 17-inch street wheel with sticky rubber and a rigid supermoto-tuned suspension, you’ve already removed most of the conditions those systems were designed to manage. You paid for sensors and software that are going to spend their working life mostly idle, which is a very different value proposition than paying for them on the bike they were actually designed around.

The suspension is the one place the FE’s higher spec plausibly still matters after conversion, and even there it’s not simple — swapping to 17” wheels and stiffer springs doesn’t automatically make either bike’s stock damping character correct for pavement. I wrote about that specific problem separately — it’s a compression-curve issue on either platform, not something the Husky’s better fork hardware solves by default.

The part that actually decides it: what happens after you crash it

You are going to crash a supermoto. Not maybe — the whole format is built around sliding a light dirt-bike-based machine into corners at angles a street bike wouldn’t survive, on a chassis with less bodywork to hide behind. Whichever bike you build, its second job is being cheap to put back together.

This is where the WR450F’s two-decade production run actually wins the argument, not on a spec sheet but on logistics. The WR-series has been broadly the same architecture long enough that there’s a mature, stable, genuinely commercial aftermarket built specifically around converting one to a supermoto — 17” wheel and rotor kits, caliper relocation brackets, lighting and dash kits sold as complete bolt-on packages, not one-off fabrication projects. You can buy the whole conversion as a documented kit instead of sourcing a 320mm front rotor, the right offset wheel, and a caliper bracket separately and hoping they line up, which is exactly the kind of afternoon that turns a weekend build into a three-month one. Crash damage parts — levers, plastics, footpegs, radiator guards — are cheap, plentiful, and interchangeable across a wide range of model years, because so many other people have already crashed the same bike and needed the same part.

The FE 501s changes generation more often — 2024 was itself a platform refresh — which fragments parts commonality year to year in a way the WR simply doesn’t have, and Austrian-family OEM parts pricing runs noticeably higher than Japanese OEM across the board. Not a niche opinion, just what you’ll find comparing part numbers for something as basic as a clutch lever.

What I’d actually build

If someone handed me the $2,750 difference in cash and said pick one: WR450F, and I’d spend the savings on suspension work and a second set of wheels so I could swap between street and dirt setups, which is a more useful upgrade for how a supermoto actually gets ridden than a quickshifter it doesn’t need. The FE 501s is not a worse motorcycle. It’s a worse decision for this specific project, once you correct the weight number and price in what a crash actually costs you two years from now.

If your goal is a stock dual-sport you’ll also take off-road seriously, that math flips entirely and the Husqvarna’s the right call. That’s just not the bike this post is about.
