Most people who clean and lube their chain religiously still get the one measurement that actually matters wrong: they eyeball stretch instead of measuring it, and they eyeball axle alignment instead of checking the marks. Both of those are the parts that actually cost you money and handling â not the cleaning, which is mostly cosmetic maintenance that makes the drivetrain last a bit longer and look less filthy.
Measuring stretch, not guessing at it
âThe chain looks looseâ is not a measurement. Pull it away from the rear sprocket at the tightest point of its travel â if you can see daylight between the chain and sprocket teeth beyond a small amount, thatâs wear, but itâs a rough check, not the real one.
The real one: measure twenty pins, pin-center to pin-center. A fresh chain measures right around 12.5 inches (317.5mm) for this span. Once youâre reading 12.6 inches or beyond, youâre at roughly 3% stretch, which is the standard replace-it threshold across most manufacturers. This matters because âstretchâ isnât the chain literally elongating like a rubber band â itâs wear at each pin-and-bushing joint accumulating across all the links, and it accelerates non-linearly. A chain at 2% stretch is fine for a while longer. The same chain three hundred miles later can be well past 3%, because worn joints wear faster once theyâve started.
Sprockets tell the same story from a different angle. A worn sprocket develops a hooked, asymmetric tooth profile people call âsharkfinâ once you know to look for it â the leading edge of each tooth wears differently than the trailing edge under load. If you see that shape, the sprocket is done regardless of what the chain measurement says, and running a new chain on a hooked sprocket wears the new chain fast and unevenly. Replace them together. This is the actual false economy in chain maintenance, not skipping a cleaning session.
Alignment is the one people skip and shouldnât
Loosen the axle nut, loosen both adjuster locknuts, and turn each side adjuster evenly, checking the alignment index marks on both sides of the swingarm as you go. The instinct is to eyeball it â âlooks straightâ â and this is exactly backwards from where the care should go, because a wheel thatâs even a few millimeters out of alignment doesnât look crooked to the eye. It shows up as uneven tire wear on one shoulder, a bike that doesnât track straight hands-off, and handling that feels subtly off in a way people usually blame on the suspension or the tires themselves, not the actual cause sitting right there in the swingarm marks.
Check both sides match before you torque the axle nut down â 80â120 Nm depending on the bike, and get your specific number, because getting this wrong on a fastener holding your rear wheel on is not where you want to be approximately right.
Cleaning and lube, compressed
O-ring or X-ring chains (most bikes built in the last twenty years) have rubber seals between the plates holding factory grease inside the rollers â use an O-ring-safe cleaner, never a pressure washer, and lube goes on the inside face where it can actually reach the rollers, not the outside where it just flings onto your wheel. Quarter-turns of the wheel, light even line, let it sit five to ten minutes before wiping the excess. Thatâs genuinely most of what there is to it; the reason this section is short is that itâs the part everyone already gets right, or at least gets close enough to right that it isnât costing anyone money.
What this is actually protecting
A worn-but-unmeasured chain that finally goes doesnât fail politely. A misaligned wheel doesnât announce itself with a warning light â it just quietly eats a tire and makes the bike feel wrong until youâve stopped noticing it feels wrong, because youâve adapted to it. Both of those cost more than the ten minutes it takes to measure twenty pins and check two alignment marks properly instead of by feel.
