Tire wear isn’t random, and it isn’t just “the tire getting old.” The shape of the wear pattern is diagnostic information about how you ride, how your bike’s aligned, and whether your suspension is doing its job — and most people replace a worn tire without reading any of it, then put the exact same problem back onto a fresh one.
Center strip, worn flat: you’re not leaning the bike
A tire worn flat down the middle, with noticeably more tread left on the shoulders, means the contact patch is spending almost all its time dead center — steady highway speed, minimal lean angle, commuting or touring miles where the bike stays mostly upright. This isn’t a problem by itself. It’s just information: if this is your wear pattern and you occasionally find yourself leaning harder into a corner than usual — an unexpected twisty road, an emergency avoidance maneuver — you’re doing it on tread that’s rarely been asked to work at that angle, with less grip margin than the worn-flat center might suggest the tire has left overall. Worth knowing before the one time it matters, not after.
Shoulders chewed, center relatively fresh: the opposite story
More wear on the edges than the middle means you’re using lean angle regularly — aggressive road riding, track days, genuinely twisty routes ridden with intent. Normal and expected for that riding style. The thing worth watching here is that shoulder wear progresses faster than center wear typically does for the same total mileage, because you’re loading a smaller contact patch harder each time you lean over. Check tread depth on the shoulders specifically, not an average across the tire — a tire that looks “half worn” from the center can be much further gone at the edges where it actually matters for this riding style.
Wear on one side only: stop blaming the tire
Uneven wear that’s clearly worse on one side — not the expected shoulder-vs-center pattern, but genuinely lopsided left-to-right — is usually not a tire problem at all. It’s alignment or suspension. A misaligned rear wheel loads one side of the contact patch more than the other continuously, and no tire survives that evenly. A blown or badly worn shock does something similar by letting the bike sit or move asymmetrically under load. Replacing the tire without finding and fixing the actual cause just buys you the same wear pattern again, on a tire that cost real money.
Cupping or scalloped wear: suspension, not tire quality
A wavy, scalloped pattern around the tire’s circumference — sometimes felt as a faint vibration before it’s visible — points at a suspension component that’s not damping properly, most often a worn shock or fork seal letting the wheel hop slightly rather than tracking the road smoothly. This one gets misdiagnosed as “a bad tire” constantly, because the symptom shows up on the tire even though the tire did nothing wrong.
What to actually do about pressure, briefly
Cold pressure, checked before riding, matched to the number on your bike’s sticker (front and rear are almost always different) — this part everyone already knows, so I’ll say it once: underinflation is the more common mistake, it generates extra sidewall heat, and it makes wear patterns above harder to read accurately because the tire’s footprint shape is already distorted from spec. Get pressure right first. It’s the baseline every wear diagnosis above assumes you’ve already covered.
The habit worth building
Don’t just glance at tread depth and decide replace-or-not. Look at the shape. A tire replaced without understanding why it wore that way is a tire you’re about to wear the same way again — the fix for lopsided wear is an alignment check, not a fresh tire, and the fix for cupping is a suspension inspection, not a tire brand swap.
