If you’ve read my chain maintenance post, you know it’s not exactly a fun job. So a reasonable question is: why does anyone still buy chain-drive bikes when belt and shaft drive both exist and need a lot less babying? The honest answer is that all three are genuinely good solutions to the same problem, and which one’s “best” depends entirely on what you’re using the bike for.
Chain: the one everyone starts with
Chain drive is light, cheap to manufacture, easy to find parts for anywhere in the world, and lets you change your final gearing in an afternoon with a fifteen-dollar sprocket. That last part matters more than people give it credit for — if you ever want a bike geared differently for highway cruising versus tighter, twistier roads, chain is the only one of the three that lets you do that without swapping the whole drivetrain.
The tradeoff is exactly what it sounds like from the maintenance post: regular cleaning, lubing, and adjustment, plus a chain and sprocket set that wears out and needs replacing every 15,000–25,000 miles depending on how well you’ve kept up with it and how you ride. It also flings a small amount of lube onto your rear wheel no matter how careful you are, which is a cosmetic annoyance more than a real problem.
Belt: chain’s low-maintenance cousin
Toothed belt drive — mostly seen on cruisers, some standards — needs essentially no lubrication and a lot less frequent adjustment than a chain. No grease flinging onto your wheel, quieter operation, and a belt properly maintained can outlast a chain by a wide margin, sometimes 30,000+ miles. It’s cleaner and easier to live with day to day, full stop.
What you give up: belts are wider and less flexible than a chain, which limits how tight your swingarm and rear geometry can be — you don’t see belt drive on sportbikes for this reason, the packaging doesn’t work. They’re also more vulnerable to a specific failure mode chains aren’t: a rock or piece of debris getting caught between the belt and the pulley can shred a belt in seconds, and while it’s rare, it’s a rare-but-total failure rather than a gradual one. Replacement belts also cost meaningfully more than a chain and sprocket set, and you generally can’t just swap final gearing the way you can with chain.
Shaft: set it and forget it
Shaft drive runs power through a driveshaft inside the swingarm to a bevel gear at the rear wheel — no exposed chain or belt at all, essentially zero regular maintenance beyond a fluid check every so often, and it’s the cleanest, quietest option of the three by a clear margin. This is why you see it dominating touring and adventure bikes, where riders are covering huge mileage and want to think about the drivetrain as little as possible.
The tradeoffs are real, though. Shaft drive is heavier than chain or belt, adds mechanical complexity (and cost) if something does go wrong internally, and produces a subtle driveline effect called shaft jacking — under hard acceleration, the reaction torque through the shaft can make the rear suspension compress or extend slightly, which changes how the bike feels compared to chain or belt under the same throttle input. Most riders never notice it. Some feel it immediately and don’t love it.
So which one
If you want to be able to tune your gearing, you’re going chain, no substitute. If you want low maintenance without shaft drive’s weight and complexity, belt is a strong middle ground, especially on a cruiser or standard where the packaging works. If you’re covering serious mileage and want to spend your time riding instead of maintaining, shaft drive is hard to beat, and most riders who’ve owned a shaft-drive tourer will tell you they don’t miss thinking about the drivetrain at all.
I ride chain-drive bikes because I like being able to change gearing and, if I’m honest, because most of the bikes I’ve wanted to own happened to come that way. It’s not the low-maintenance choice. It’s just the one I’ve made peace with.
